    Oh cool i love watches

For millennia, gold has held a special allure to the world’s people, from kings and queens to the average person on the street. Empires were built on gold, and in more than one case, greed for the precious metal caused a downfall that was both swift and dramatic. From the first days that watches were worn to show social standing, gold has been a featured metal in the handcrafting of these fine time pieces. Let’s take a closer look at the history of gold in watch making from the middle ages to modern day.

The first use of gold in watches can be traced back to the 16th century. Not only was gold the obvious choice for many watches because of its intrinsic value and its clear designation of class, but gold is also a very malleable metal, which makes it perfect for detailed metalworking, as well as its natural resistance to corrosion and tarnishing. Before the very first gold watch was crafted, it was clear that gold would be the ultimate expression of one of the most complicated and beautiful items the 16th century had ever seen.

For a time soon after gold watches started being made by hand, every part of the watch would be either made of gold or a gold alloy. This was done mainly to preserve the sense of “purity” that the watch came with and to help raise the value of the piece even higher. This included things like gears as well as the more obvious outer casing. In today’s more modern electronic watches, bands are more likely to be leather and plastic and the main casing is likely to be steel, but inside, gold is a major ingredient in the advanced computer wiring that keeps your watch ticking. So while there are a wide variety of watches available today, almost all of them are “gold” watches to some degree.

Long before the advent of the first wristwatch, gold has been a featured player in time pieces for as far back as anyone can remember. From the arcane hourglass to the sundial, gold has been helping humans keep track of the sun for as long as anyone could remember. Just like how gold was strictly used for decoration in hourglasses, it was likely first thought of as a decretive metal for watches, until craftsman realized how beneficial the soft metal was in almost all aspects of watch making. This insight gave watchmakers the ability increase the asking price for many watches since they could boast that their works were not only gold on the outside, but gold on the inside, as well.

Today, nothing quite makes that positive and professional impression quite like a gold watch. From exclusive brands like Rolex and Cartier to more inexpensive styles, gold is an absolute fixture in today’s time keeping world. Millions of people get up every morning and put on a gold watch, even if it is only gold in color and not in actuality. It is difficult to think of gold watches not being a huge part of our daily lives, and as trends go, it is one that has been with us for hundreds of years and shows no signs of stopping anytime soon.
